Virgin Australia is set to increase seat capacity in northern Australia by 6% compared to the same period last year. However, the airline is facing backlash over its decision to cancel the direct Adelaide-Darwin route, a move that has sparked criticism from local leaders.
Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro strongly condemned the decision, calling it “awful and unbelievable.” Speaking to ABC Radio Darwin, she emphasized the importance of air connectivity for regional Australia. “This is a big part of why we need to rebuild the economy. We need to grow our population, we need more business happening here, and these airlines need to be held accountable for what they’re doing to regional Australia,” she said.
A Virgin Australia spokesperson acknowledged that the decision might be disappointing for some passengers but explained that reallocating capacity to more in-demand routes would allow the airline to serve travellers better.
To accommodate increasing demand, Virgin Australia will expand its services on key routes, particularly Brisbane-Darwin and Melbourne-Darwin, with additional flights scheduled during the peak travel period from June to August 2025. Passengers can expect up to two daily flights from Brisbane, up to nine weekly flights from Melbourne, and between five to seven weekly services from Perth.
Despite the Adelaide-Darwin route suspension, overall capacity in the Northern Territory is projected to increase by 3% compared to the previous summer season, supported by the introduction of new services to Uluru.
The Adelaide-Darwin route will remain operational until June 22, giving regular travellers time to adjust their plans. For those seeking direct flights after that date, Qantas and Jetstar will continue to operate on this route, ensuring connectivity between Adelaide and the Northern Territory capital.
For travellers impacted by the route change, Adelaide offers a range of accommodation options, including Adelaide serviced apartments ideal for business and long-term stays. These apartments provide convenient access to the city’s attractions and transport hubs, making them a suitable choice for visitors adjusting their travel plans.
