Over 40 millimeters of rain drenched Sydney’s CBD between 8:30 PM and 11:30 PM, causing flooding at Town Hall station and leaving thousands without power.

Emergency services were overwhelmed with calls, receiving approximately 1,240 reports of fallen trees, roof damage, leaks, and other storm-related incidents.

Tragically, earlier in the afternoon, a man lost his life when a tree fell on his car near Cowra.

At Sydney Airport, wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h forced the cancellation of several domestic flights, including:

  • Jetstar’s 10:00 PM flight to Melbourne
  • Virgin Australia’s 9:30 PM flight to Brisbane
  • Qantas’ 7:30 PM flight to Perth

At one point, all flights were temporarily grounded due to the severe weather conditions. A Sydney Airport spokesperson advised passengers to check directly with airlines for updates, stating: “Due to heavy storm activity, there have been flight delays, cancellations, and diversions. Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines regarding the status of their flights.”

Jetstar later announced additional services to accommodate affected travelers. However, according to Sydney Airport data, no international flights were canceled.

For those stranded in Sydney or looking to stay longer due to the storm disruptions, the city offers a wide range of furnished apartments. These accommodations provide flexibility and comfort, with fully equipped kitchens, living spaces, and easy access to transportation options. Whether you're in town for business or leisure, Sydney’s furnished apartments are an ideal choice for a longer stay or for those dealing with unexpected delays.

Passengers also faced difficulties accessing the airport, as several major train routes were disrupted due to industrial action, including the T8 Airport Train.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned that more heavy rain and strong winds are expected to persist well into Thursday, adding to the challenges caused by the storm.
