The data shows that 36% of Australians plan to spend more on flights, 31% on accommodation, and 14% on car hire in 2025. This highlights a strong desire for experiences that foster connection and togetherness.

Skyscanner’s latest report, Travel Trends: The Search for Community and Collective Experiences 2025, highlights travellers' evolving behaviour and critical industry trends. Combining insights from millions of flight and hotel searches with a consumer behaviour study reveals that Australian travellers are eager to get the best value in 2025, focusing on budget-friendly destinations and affordable flights. Top destinations like Thailand, Northern Ireland, and Spain have been identified as offering the best value for money.

However, cost savings aren’t the only priority. Skyscanner outlined seven major cultural trends shaping how Aussies plan to travel:

  • Art-venture – Culture plays a key role for 59% of Aussie travellers, and 2 in 5 plan to explore immersive art experiences on their holidays next year.
  • Cowboy-Core – Inspired by the Wild West, 29% of Aussies, and up to 44% of 18-24-year-olds, are seeking cowboy-themed holidays and trips centered around country music.
  • Horti-culture – The connection with nature continues to grow, with 72% of Aussies enjoying visits to gardens as part of their holiday plans.
  • Gami-Vacation – Video games are inspiring travel plans, with over a third (31%) of Australians booking trips to locations featured in their favorite games.

Jarrod Kris, a Skyscanner travel expert, emphasized Aussies' enthusiasm for new destinations and bargains, with places like Krabi benefiting from a 34% drop in airfare prices. He also noted an increased interest in South American and Eastern European destinations, with locations like Labuan Bajo, Yogyakarta, Finland, Iceland, and Norway gaining popularity.

For those seeking affordable, comfortable accommodations while exploring Melbourne, Corporate Keys furnished apartments in Melbourne CBD that are ideal for extended stays. These serviced apartments provide a home-like atmosphere with all the amenities you need, making them a great option for travellers wanting to experience Melbourne’s vibrant city life while staying within budget.

Skyscanner has also partnered with digital bank Up to support Australians in saving for their travels. According to Up’s Data Scientist Brian Oakley, travel is a major goal for their users, with over 80,000 customers using travel-themed savings accounts. Oakley advises Aussies to set aside a portion of their pay at least 6-12 months ahead of trips, automating the process to ensure consistent savings.
